Metro Sky Gardens, Mumbai

The “Open Spaces Pyramid” is a representative diagram comparing the open space per person in the major cities of the world.

The Mumbai Metro is to provide rapid mass transit services to people living in areas not serviced by the existing suburban rail network. It is proposed through an existing dense residential fabric, starting in Versova, connecting commercial, industrial and the upcoming residential areas en-route Ghatkopar. The new “lifeline” for the city has caused a considerable boom in the real estate evaluation along the proposed route; leading to the loss of several adjoining green spaces to private residential or commercial developments. Recreation spaces for the dense populous living along the Metro line are virtually non-existent.

The Mumbai streetscape is a highly conflicted environment with several activities contesting for existence. Within this congested environment, Mumbai’s city streets have always been used as a play area for vast majority of the youth. Even some of the gated communities lack sufficient space for ‘Play’. Thus emerged the concept to utilise the wasted volumes of spaces under-neath the Metro lines to create new ‘Playscapes’ for the city.

The scheme proposes for modular interventions in-between the existing column system of the Metro line.
A variety of play and recreation areas, sky gardens and nurseries, flanked by a continuous cycling track are created.
The different modules can be replicated based on the neighbourhood requirements along the metro line.
Variations in sectional heights allow for different functions to be proposed throughout the line.

The nurseries offer relaxation spaces above the congested street level designed for all age-groups. The nurseries also assist in promoting urban gardening systems through the community. The safety systems vary along the elevation of the Metro Sky Garden depending on the function variations of the module.
